3AF Urges Hillary Clinton and Other Candidates To Engage Asian American Media

March 6, 2007

Statement from the Asian American Advertising Federation - 3AF March 2, 2007.

LONG BEACH, Calif.—(U.S. ASIAN WIRE)--Following the barring of local Chinese American journalists at a Hillary Clinton fundraiser in San Francisco last week, the multicultural advertising industry trade group - The Asian American Advertising Federation (3AF) - urged Senator Clinton and other political candidates to take notice of, and engage, the dynamic, and fast-growing Asian media in the United States.

"As per the news reports, we believe that the barring of journalists representing local Chinese print and broadcast media at Senator Clinton's fundraiser last week was based on the misunderstanding that the journalists were members of the foreign press," said Julia Huang, President of the 3AF. "Nevertheless, it is clear that Senator Clinton's campaign does not fully appreciate the scope of domestic Asian media available in the United States, as well as the long history that many of these media outlets have in serving the local Asian American populations. The domestic Asian media reaches both immigrant and U.S.-born Asian voters, and is therefore worthy of our national and local candidates' attention," Huang stressed.

Per Census 2000, six Asian ethnic groups comprise 88% of the total Asian population of the United States. In rank order by their national population size, they include: Chinese, Filipinos, Asian Indians, Vietnamese, Korean, and Japanese. Other Asian populations form large clusters in specific regions of the country. Across the country, there are more than 600 Asian media outlets serving the news, information, and entertainment needs of the Asian American population.
