Opportunity to Sponsor 4th Annual Asian Heritage Awards Ceremony

May 7, 2007

SAN DIEGO—(U.S. ASIAN WIRE)--ASIA, The Journal of Culture & Commerce, Southern California’s leading newspaper serving the Asian Pacific Islander community, has two sponsorship opportunities remaining for corporations interested in participating in this year’s Asian Heritage Awards at the University of San Diego May 22.

The annual luncheon ceremony at the prestigious Joan B. Kroc Institute of Peace and Justice is the only event of its kind in California honoring achievements of Asian Americans in 12 categories. Each sponsor will present an award in one of these categories: education, legal affairs, performing arts, art/philosophy/literature, cultural preservation, community service, entrepreneurship, business enterprise, media, science/technology, health and medicine, youth leadership. In addition, Dr. Michael Inoue, honorary consul general of Japan in San Diego, will receive special recognition for his years of community service.

The event is co-sponsored by ASIA and Prudential Financial. Inoue will receive his special recognition honors from the San Diego Chinese Center. Other sponsors include Kyocera International, Phamatech Corp., Epsilon Systems Solutions, Cox Communications, Burkett & Wong Engineers, Simon Wong Engineering, UCSD, Hi-Tem Corp., and Neighborhood National Bank. Supporting sponsors include the University of San Diego, California Center for the Arts, ThinkOut Solutions and media sponsors U.S. Asian Wire and New America Media.

The awards, the property of Asia Media Inc., publishers of the newspaper ASIA, were created by publishers Rosalynn Carmen and Leonard Novarro to honor achievement and community service within San Diego’s Asian community and in commemoration of Asian Heritage Month.

The keynote speaker at this year’s event is Dr. Flossie Wong-Staal, co-discoverer of the HIV virus in the early 1980s. Wong-Staal’s speech will focus on her career and the choices that led her to pursue scientific research, as well as her Chinese heritage.

“This event is a phenomenon,” said Rosalynn Carmen, Asia Media Inc.’s president. “It is a true community partnership. The nominees are picked by our community, who, in turn, vote and decide on who is most deserving. Thus far, 7,250 votes have been cast for candidates through email ballot and the ballot in our newspaper. At the rate voting is going, we will surpass last year’s tally of more than 10,000 votes.”

Said Novarro: “In effect, the awards have brought together our many diverse communities into one, with one purpose – to choose individuals most deserving. We are grateful to our sponsors whose belief in diversity and our Asian community is demonstrated by their participation.”
