AZN Television Kicks Off 2007 with New Series, Movies and Specials

Exclusive Series “Style: Asia,” New Korean Drama “Jumong” and a New Season of AZN Original “NBA Timeout” are Among the 1Q Highlights

January 3, 2007

CENTENNIAL, Colo. – (U.S. ASIAN WIRE) -- AZN Television, the Comcast-owned network for Asian-Americans, is ramping up its programming offering for the first quarter of 2007. The channel will add two new series and renew its popular “NBA Timeout” series, as well as premiere a number of films and dramas.

"We’re kicking off the New Year right,” said Rod Shanks, General Manager, AZN Television. “2007 is the Year of the Pig, according to the Chinese calendar -- a very prosperous and fortunate time. We’re celebrating by including some fantastic new programming that you just can’t find anywhere else in this country. All of this new programming will be shown in English or will be subtitled in English to be accessible to the widest possible Asian-American audience.”

Premiering in January will be the new fashion series “Style: Asia,” an ultimate guide to fashion from cities as diverse as Singapore, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Bangkok – all of which are vying to be branded “the style capital of Asia.” “Style: Asia” will have its US premiere on Jan. 2 on AZN Television.

Also premiering in January is the half-hour weekly music video series, “Music Bang,” featuring Asian and Asian-American artists. The series premieres Jan. 12.

AZN will be featuring several new drama series in January and February, beginning with “Handsome Siblings,” which stars Chinese pop star Nicholas Tse and TV superstar Dickie Cheung, premiering Jan. 1. “Mars,” starring Vic Chou from Asia’s most popular group F4 and starlet Barbi Xu, also debuts on Jan. 1. “Drunken Kung Fu,” a Vietnamese drama starring Hong Kong Academy Best Actress award winner Anita Yuen, premieres on Jan. 2. “Jumong,” a big-budget historical drama which drew record audiences in Korea, premieres Feb. 20, followed by “Seven Swordsmen,” a Chinese drama based on the classic martial arts novel, on Feb. 26.

A new season of the AZN original “NBA Timeout” will premiere in February. This series goes straight to the Asian-American community around the country to talk to fans about their passion for basketball. Profiles of players will be featured, along with a showcase of the week’s top 10 plays, player news, league community events and the “Jam of the Week,” a mix of hot international tunes with exhilarating NBA action.

AZN will also premiere new films, including “Initial D,” a movie based on one of Japan’s most popular comics (Manga) and a 2005 box-office hit across Asia. “Initial D” stars Edison Chen, of “Clerks 2” fame and Taiwanese pop idol Jay Chou, and premieres Feb.15. On Feb. 22, AZN will premiere “Vertical Ray of the Sun” from Vietnamese director Anh Tran (“Cyclo,” “The Scent of Green Papaya”), and on March 1, the channel will feature “Tae Guk Gi: Brotherhood of War,” one of the biggest successes in Korean film history.

“We are very proud of our line-up for the first quarter of 2007,” continued Mr. Shanks. “This is programming that resonates will all Asian cultures. We are very pleased to be working with programming partners like NBA Entertainment and Sony Pictures to make sure we have the very best entertainment from across Asia, as well as quality original programming produced by and for Asian-Americans.”
